ECUADOR, 16/06/2004. Twenty-year-old Jennifer Hawkins, the representative of Australia, was elected Miss Universe 2004 in the event held at Cemexpo in the city of Quito in a glamorous ceremony that began at 8:00 and lasted about two hours. She replaced Amelia Vega of the Dominican Republic as the scepter-holder.
Jefferson Pérez formed part of the jury, an honor he was awarded more than two weeks earlier, but which was kept secret and only made known the day before the event. It should be noted that never before had a person from the host country been named to be part of the jury, but on this occasion the organizers decided that Jeff should be part of this sensational jury in the name of the Ecuadorian government and as a way to make a tribute to the champion.
All members of the jury received training by the organizers, instructing them on the parameters for judging within the election.
Maria Susana Rivadeneira, candidate for Ecuador, classified among the 10 finalists of this great event, but could not advance to the group of five finalists; in any event, the country recognized our queen as a wonderful representative of Ecuador.
Eighty representatives of the same number of countries participated in this event in which all entered with the same possibilities of achieving the title of the most beautiful woman in the universe.
As part of the spectacle, Cuban singer Gloria Estefan offered the audience several jewels of her musical repertory, and although her participation was very short, the audience was delighted.
After the ceremony a private party was held in honor of the candidates and especially for the new queen, Jennifer Hawkins, to which, in addition, important personalities were invited by the organizers.
This show was attended by 8,000 and seen by 700 million people around the world through the United States network NBC, a grand opportunity to acquaint people of the whole world with the beauty of Ecuador.
Without a doubt, it was a gratifying experience for Jefferson, who is today the living image of this hard-working, honest and enchanting country, which showed the world the charisma of its people and the bio-diversity existing in its natural surroundings.
