ECUADOR, 14/06/2004. Good performance by Ecuadorian athletes in the Junior Track and Field Grand Prix
Ecuador, Brasil, Venezuela and Argentina took the first places in the South American Junior Track and Field Grand Prix held in Cuenca last Saturday.
The national team stood out in the 10,000 meter race walk for women and men with victories by Johana Ordoñéz and Patricio Ortega. In addition Francisco Aguirre of Ecuador won the silver medal in the 400 meter event. The will participate in the World Championship to be held in Italy from the 13th to the 18th of this month.
According to Fausto Mendoza, vice president of the Ecuadorian Track and Field Federation, the level shown in this Grand Prix was high. "The athletes confirmed why they classified for the World Championship in Italy."
Mendoza assured that expectations in the World Championship are centered on the race walking competitions, and principally on Patricio Ortega of Loja, who is a candidate to obtain a medal in the event to be held July 17th.
The competition in Cuenca was the last preparatory event for the local athletes and also for the athletes of other South American countries before the World Championship on Italian soil.
