Julio Idrovo elected the best weightlifter of South America

, 11/01/2005. Julio Idrovo, of Cuenca, Ecuador, was declared “Best University Weightlifter of South America” at the championship held in Lima, Peru. Idrovo earned this recognition for his triple gold medal in the 77 Kg division.

This achievement is in addition to a long chain of medals and trophies won by Idrovo in 12 years of participation in the sport, in which he won all titles both in and outside Ecuador with the exception of an Olympic medal. Cuenca’s, star fulfilled his dream of competing in the Olympic Games at an early age, finishing in a promising place at the Athens Games.

“It’s very exciting to hear the news, Julio deserves it for his effort and constant descipline. In this way in finished one of his best years in sports”, said his sister Veronica, visibly moved. She added that the first thing she will do, together with the rest of the family, is hug and kiss him upon his return. “My brother only lacks an Olympic medal, which he will be competing for in 2008 in Beijing, China,” his sister asserted.

But it was not only Julio Idrovo who brought glory to Ecuador, his team-mate on the campaign by the weightlifters of Azuay.

The delegation planned to return last night to Guayaquil and from there continue on to their respective cities.

In this way we can appreciate how athletes from Cuenca are rewarded for their triumphs in other countries.
