Ecuador honors Jefferson Perez with a statue in the city of Cuenca 
ECUADOR, 09/11/2005. A four meters tall sculpture with the physical features of the race walker Jefferson Perez was erected on a strategic spot at the “Parque de la Madre”, in Cuenca. This art piece will always remember the gold medal obtained by the azuayo on the Olympic Games in Atlanta, the 26th of June, 1996, his five world championships and his world record.
This event was endorsed by the main institutions as the Mayor, Prefect end the Sports Federation of Azuay, and made by the artist from Cuenca Hernan Rodas.
To the inaugural ceremony assisted Alejandro Serrano, vice president of the Republic, Paul Carrasco and Marcelo Cabrera, Prefect and Mayor of town. Danilo Carrera and Eduardo Encalada, presidents of the Olympic Committee and of the Sports Federation of Azuay.
In the span of 50 minutes, in their speeches, each one pointed out the virtues of this sportsman and agreed that his is an example for the future generations. The honored called this day a very important and historical date for him. “I’m 30 years old and the fact that they had built a statue for me is historical”, said the athlete.
The sculpture, bearing the number 1326 which was the one he wore when he obtained the gold medal. A plaque on its bottom that says: ”Glory casts no shadow”. Rodas started the statue in May of last year and finished six months later. This way Ecuador gives a fair tribute to one of his favorite sons.
On the last few days, Jefferson has been designated as one of the ten most important Ecuadorians of history. This original idea from the London BBC was adapted for Ecuador by the television station Ecuavisa and other media, will reach its peak next Sunday the 27th of November and will be shown on national television by Ecuavisa.
