ECUADOR, 17/03/2007. Julio Idrovo, a weightlifter from Cuenca in the 77 kg class, will have one of his best birthdays. Born March 15th, 1981, Julio just set a new absolute national record of 153 kg in the snatch mode on his 26th birthday, pulverizing his own record of 151 kg that he set the 1st of September of last year at the National Absolute Championship held in Cuenca. This record ranks him among the top ten weightlifters in the world and the top five in Latin America.
Idrovo, who is a local and national elite athlete, commented, “I’m now two kilos from the South American and Pan American record. In the clean we are working to arrive in the best possible condition for the Pan American event in Rio de Janeiro; furthermore, we have improved four kilos in the total. For the beginning of the year we are in very good condition.”
Idrovo highlighted the physical condition of the Cuban, Yoelmis Hernandez, winner of the silver medal in the snatch event, saying that he is one of the best lifters in the world. Walter Llerena of Quito took the bronze medal in that category.
