The last November 3rd, on the occasion of Cuenca’s Independence Day celebration, the Municipality of Cuenca decorated Jefferson Perez as the most illustrious Citizen that Cuenca has had in its entire history, and with this object the Canton council in plenum voted unanimously to create the award “450th Anniversary of the Founding by the Spanish.”, to be awarded on this occasion only in Cuenca’s history. Justifiably Jefferson was selected for this award based on his merits which include the following: a great sports career, excellent humanitarian actions and for being a model of effort, work and excellence for present and future generations. Among other characteristics, these were sufficient for the local authorities to elect him The Most Illustrious Citizen of All Time.
This award was presented at the formal session to celebrate 187 years of the emancipation of Cuenca, known as “The Athens of Ecuador.” The ceremony was attended by the most important dignitaries of the country, headed by the nation’s president, Rafael Correa, who was designated to present this very important and unique award to Cuenca’s most illustrious native son, who received a thunderous standing applause. Jeff thanked the dignitaries and all the citizens of Cuenca for such a noble gesture on the part of the city, and in his statements to the press, Jeff said he felt very gratified at receiving such a high honor. In addition he reiterated his commitment to the country in all areas. Upon being asked by a journalist if that meant a commitment to represent Cuenca and the country in other spheres, Jeff said he aspired to high achievement in other areas, but only after acquiring a better academic preparation, which together with the moral values he received from his parents 33 years ago, are the two fundamental elements for achieving excellence in any activity.
